Mulberry founder Roger Saul: ‘We were picked up by bandits in Andalusia’

From being mistaken for Peter Sellers’ friend in a Paris nightclub to a brush with bandits in the mountains of Andalusia, Roger Saul’s journey has been anything but ordinary. In this candid Sunday Times profile, I reflect on a life richly travelled – from youthful escapades hitchhiking to Morocco with my wild-child sister, to launching Mulberry with 1,000 belts (sold, somewhat disastrously, at cost price) on my first ever business trip to Paris.

Alongside the glamour and grit of my early fashion years, I share memories closer to home too – summers bodysurfing at Croyde Bay, sailing in Suffolk, and the special magic of Tresco in the Isles of Scilly where Monty and I still escape each year.

These days, life is centred at Sharpham Park, the organic spelt farm I transformed after Mulberry, and where we continue to grow award-winning crops – and ideas – rooted in nature.
