Nuts About the Harvest – Our Somerset Walnuts Are In
It’s been a beautiful season here at Sharpham Park, and we’re thrilled to share a glimpse into this year’s English walnut harvest.
Back in 2004, inspired by a fascinating discovery in the walls of our 16th-century manor (the remains of a monk’s lunch – chicken bones, scallop shells, and walnuts!), Roger planted 300 organic walnut trees as part of our farm restoration. Now, after 20 years, the trees are fully mature and producing exceptional walnuts.
Sharpham Park’s walnut orchards are managed using traditional, sustainable methods. Historically, every farm in this part of Somerset had at least one walnut tree – the roots thrive in our clay soil, and the trees sit well within a silvopasture system, where livestock graze the understorey. It’s a low-impact, biodiversity-friendly way of farming that we’re proud to continue.
What a great day celebrating the harvest together at Sharpham Park.
Our harvest includes soft, creamy “wet walnuts” – a seasonal treat – as well as a small number of green walnuts, which we pickle by hand. Once harvested, the walnuts are cleaned, gently dried, and hand-packed into beautiful boxes, ready for the festive season and beyond.
Walnuts are one of the oldest tree foods known to humanity, and with good reason. They’re rich in omega-3 fatty acids, great for heart health, and full of antioxidants. From Ancient Persia to modern-day Somerset, they’ve stood the test of time.
Order now to get your hands on a piece of this year’s limited harvest – once they’re gone, they’re gone!
